
Why Gold-Coated IR Emitters are a Lifesaver for Glass Annealing
If you’ve ever worked with online glass annealing, you know the struggle. You need heat—and you need it now. If the temperature isn’t exactly right the moment the glass hits the line, you’re looking at internal stress and a lot of wasted material. Standard heaters are just too slow. They lag. That’s why we lean on gold-coated shortwave infrared (SWIR) emitters. They don’t mess around; they react almost instantly.
The trick with the gold coating
Here is how it works. A basic quartz tube is a bit wasteful—it lets a lot of heat leak backward toward the lamp housing. We fix that by adding a thin layer of gold to the back of the emitter. Think of it as a thermal mirror. Instead of the heat drifting off in every direction, the gold pushes all that energy forward, straight into the glass. You get a much more intense heat hit exactly where you need it, and you aren’t wasting power heating up the chassis of your own machine.
No more waiting around
In a continuous production line, “warm-up time” is just another word for “lost money.” These emitters hit full blast in seconds. Plus, if you have to ramp your line speed up or down, you can tweak the power in real-time. No more worrying about the glass under-heating or getting scorched because the belt speed changed. It just keeps things moving.
The catch (because there’s always one)
Now, be honest: high-intensity SWIR lamps put out a massive amount of heat. Even with the gold coating directing the energy forward, the ends of the lamps and the housing are still going to get scorching hot. You can’t skimp on your cooling. Whether you’re using fans or water-jackets, make sure they’re up to the task. If the cooling fails, you’re risking burnt-out electrodes or warped brackets, and that’s a headache nobody wants on a Tuesday morning.
Getting them into your line
We designed these to be simple drop-in replacements for your existing annealing tunnels. We obsess over the small stuff—the tube length and the connector fit—so you aren’t fighting with stubborn wiring during a teardown. Just make sure your alignment is spot on. If the lamp isn’t aimed right, that reflected beam won’t hit the center of the glass, and you lose the benefit of the gold coating.
