
Why your bathroom heater probably sucks (and how to actually fix it)
Ever stepped out of a hot shower into a bathroom that feels like a walk-in freezer? It’s the worst. Most of those old-school “lamp heaters” just can’t keep up. They aren’t really built for the steam and humidity of a real bathroom, and they usually give up the ghost way too soon. That’s why we’ve been moving toward high-standard waterproof infrared heaters. They don’t just try to warm up the air; they warm you. The secret is in how the heat moves. Standard heaters try to warm the air around them. The problem? Hot air rises. It heads straight for the ceiling, leaving you shivering on the bathmat. Infrared is different. It sends out waves of energy that travel through the air without bothering it. The heat only happens when those waves hit something solid—like your skin. If you’ve got high ceilings, this is the only way to feel that “instant warmth” without waiting twenty minutes for the whole room to thaw out. Let’s talk about the “IP Rating” thing. Steam is basically the enemy of electronics. Cheap heaters let moisture sneak in, which leads to corroded wires or short circuits. Not great. We look for high IP ratings because they basically seal the guts of the heater away from the steam and splashes. It keeps the quartz tube and the wiring bone-dry. Without a proper seal, those things usually burn out in a single season. It’s just a waste of money. A few things to watch out for during install. You can’t just slap these anywhere. These units put out a lot of concentrated heat. If your ceiling is made of cheap plastic or thin PVC, be careful. The heat can actually warp the fixtures if they’re too close. We usually play around with the height and the angle to make sure you get a nice, warm “cone” of heat over the shower without creating any weird hot spots. And a pro tip: give them their own dedicated circuit. These arrays pull a lot of power. If you hook them up to the same circuit as your lights and outlets, you’ll probably be tripping your breakers more often than you’d like.
