
Why We Use Explosion-Proof Quartz for Bathroom Heaters
Designing towel rails for bathrooms is a bit of a nightmare if you don’t account for one thing: thermal shock. See, the moisture isn’t the real enemy here. It’s what happens when a tiny, cold drop of water hits a tube that’s screaming at 600°C. With a standard lamp, that’s it. Crack. The glass just gives up. That’s why we only use explosion-proof quartz tubes. The deal with thermal shock Now, quartz is already pretty good at handling heat, but it has its breaking point. In a steamy shower, the temperature difference between the heating element and a stray water drop is just too extreme. We use a specialized tempered quartz that’s treated to handle that rapid shrinking and expanding. And here’s the best part: if the tube does happen to crack, it’s designed to manage the internal pressure. It won’t shatter into a million shards. It’s basically a built-in safety net. Getting the heat where it belongs We stick with high-purity fused quartz because it lets the infrared light pass right through. This means the heat goes straight into the fabric of your towel instead of just heating up the air in the room. Inside, there’s a tungsten filament sitting in a halogen gas mix. This keeps the filament from burning out too fast, which means the lamp lasts way longer. But a word of caution: you’ve got to make sure the housing is vented. If that heat gets trapped inside the rail, your sockets are going to melt. Not a good look. Real-world installation You can’t just toss these into any old fixture and hope for the best. First, make sure your wiring can handle the wattage, or you’ll deal with voltage drops. I always recommend high-temp silicone wiring for the connections—it just holds up better. Also, remember that even though the glass is “explosion-proof,” it still gets incredibly hot. You need a physical guard so nobody accidentally touches it. And if you’re installing these in a really humid spot, double-check the IP rating on your junction box. If moisture leaks into the terminals, your RCD will trip faster than you can blink.
