
Why you should ditch those old bathroom heat lamps for IR panels
We’ve all been there. You step out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom, flick on those old-school heat lamps, and suddenly you’re being blinded by a light so bright it feels like an interrogation lamp. Plus, you’re warm in one tiny spot, but your toes are still icing over. That’s why more people are switching to high-IP infrared (IR) panels. They just make more sense for a bathroom. The battle against steam Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam and the occasional splash, most heaters eventually give up. Cheap ones usually leak at the seal or just short out because condensation gets where it shouldn’t. That’s where the “IP rating” comes in. Think of it as a shield. We use IP44-rated enclosures—basically, we seal everything up with silicone gaskets and reinforced housings. It keeps the guts of the heater dry. Because if moisture hits the terminals, the whole thing is toast. Simple as that. Heat you feel, not light you see Here is the cool part about the physics. Those old halogen bulbs heat things up by blasting short-wave radiation and a ton of blinding light. Modern IR heaters are different. They use quartz tubes with special coatings that shift the spectrum. You get all the warmth, but none of the glare. Instead of trying to heat up all the air in the room first, the energy goes straight to your skin and the walls. It feels more like standing in the sun. A few things to keep in mind Now, you can’t just rip out a lamp and pop in a panel. They’re a bit bigger, so you’ll need a little more ceiling real estate. Also, keep in mind that while a halogen bulb is “instant,” an IR panel takes a few minutes longer to hit its peak. It’s a slower burn, but it creates a much more consistent warmth. One last tip: check your circuit breaker. These panels pull a sustained load, and if your wiring is ancient, you might find yourself tripping the power in the middle of January. Better to check now than to be shivering in the dark later.
