
Why we’re ditching those old bathroom light-bulbs for IR heaters
You know those old-school bathroom heat lamps? The ones that look like big, glowing light bulbs? They’re kind of a waste. Most of the energy they use ends up as light you don’t need, rather than actual warmth. That’s why we’re moving toward high-standard waterproof infrared (IR) heaters. Instead of trying to fight the humidity and warm up all the air in the room, these things beam the heat directly at you. It feels more like standing in a patch of sunlight.
Dealing with the steam
Bathrooms are tough on electronics. Between the shower steam and the splashes, moisture gets everywhere. If it leaks into a standard heater, you’re looking at short circuits or rust. We solve this with high “IP ratings.” In plain English? We use sealed quartz tubes and heavy-duty gaskets to keep the water out. Plus, IR waves are great at cutting through a foggy room without losing their punch.
The good and the bad
The best part is the speed. It’s instant. You flip the switch and you feel the heat immediately. No waiting around shivering in a towel. But, there are a couple of things you need to watch out for. First, these units pull a decent amount of power. If you’re swapping out a few old bulbs for high-wattage IR,check your wiring. You don’t want to be standing in the dark because you tripped the breaker. Also, placement is key. This heat is intense. If you mount the unit too low, you might actually scorch your ceiling or wall materials. Give it some breathing room.
Keeping it running
If you’re renovating, these usually fit right into the spots where your old lamps were. We use special alloys for the reflectors so they don’t pit or peel when they hit soap residue and steam. They’re pretty low-maintenance, but here’s a pro tip: keep the reflectors clean. If dust or grime builds up on the lens, you’ll lose about 10-15% of your heat. A quick wipe-down every now and then keeps it feeling like new.
