
Keeping Your Bathroom Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing around. In that kind of environment, a basic heater is just asking for a short circuit or, worse, a nasty leak. That’s why we build our units to the IPX4 standard. In plain English? They’re splash-proof.
How we keep the water out
The real battle happens at the junction points. Most housings let water vapor sneak in, which creates a path for electricity to travel where it shouldn’t. To stop that, we use high-temp silicone seals and reinforced potting compounds right where the wires enter. It basically plugs the holes so moisture can’t touch the guts of the machine. Then there’s the heating element. It lives inside a quartz envelope. We make sure the seals between that quartz and the end caps are airtight. Why? Because if even a little bit of steam leaks into that tube, the tungsten filament pops instantly.Poof. Gone.
The heat struggle
Here is the tricky part: IPX4 means the unit has to be sealed, but sealing a heater usually traps the heat inside. You can’t just wrap a lamp in plastic to keep it dry—you’d melt the whole thing. To fix this, we use die-cast aluminum housings with built-in heat sinks. This pulls the heat away from the internal wiring and pushes it out, keeping the electronics cool while you stay warm. One quick tip on mounting: give it some breathing room. If you tuck the unit too close to a ceiling that can burn or warp, the trapped heat can trigger your fire alarms or ruin your fixture. Just stick to the clearance gaps in the manual.
Getting it wired up
We use moisture-resistant cabling because standard jackets tend to crack after heating up and cooling down a few hundred times. When you’re installing it, make sure that connection box stays sealed with its gasket. If there’s even a tiny gap in the conduit entry, that IPX4 rating disappears and you’re risking a shock. And honestly? Just use a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). It’s an extra layer of safety that gives you total peace of mind while you’re stepping out of the shower.
